If you are interested in gaining a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) or a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ), the work you do as part of Scotland’s Rural Past can contribute towards this. Anyone can do an NVQ/SVQ.  The details below provide information about how this works and who to contact.

Archaeology. NVQ/SVQ Level 3 - an Accredited Qualification

An Archaeology NVQ/SVQ  is a valuable accredited qualification to hold and will prove your competence and career prospects.  The qualification will build on the practical fieldwork and historical research work you are involved in as part of an SRP project and the training already given by Scotland’s Rural Past.

Your experience and the work you do in the field or in the archives give you evidence for your portfolio.

You meet your Assessor at the beginning of the project. They help you build your portfolio and plan your way through the collection of evidence.

Your Assessor will arrange to look at the evidence you have gathered at regular intervals and by using distance learning

Your Supervisor will be more closely involved in your practical work, possibly as the person co-ordinating your SRP project. Your Supervisor will be able to sign your evidence to prove that it is authentic and reliable.

Topics for inclusion in your NVQ/SVQ may be:

Collecting and Analysing Information
Health and Safety, and Security in the Workplace
Working with Others
Observing and Recording Information
Preparing for Operations.

How long will it take?

You can work at your own speed. Depending on how quickly you are able to collect evidence, the qualification can be achieved in six months to one year.

How much will it cost?

Archaeology Level 3 costs £1275 for the administration and assessment.  50% funding may be available from the Scottish Museum Council and other funders. Details of possible grants are provided in the Funds section of the SRP website

Who created the Archaeology NVQ?

The criteria were drawn up by the Institute of Field Archaeologists.  The structured format fills skills gaps and creates achievable Occupational Standards.
