Preservation

Only a tiny minority of the many thousands of abandoned rural settlement remains in Scotland have any kind of legal protection to ensure their preservation and conservation for future generations. Through the course of your SRP project you may become interested in the future of the site or sites you survey and want to take steps to help prevent future deterioration, for example, removing vegetation which might be damaging the site, and repairing or consolidating the fabric of the building remains. This section deals with measures you can take to assist in the longer-term management and conservation of neglected and undervalued settlement remains.

Adopt a monument

Adopt a monument is a conservation project organised and run by the Council for Scottish Archaeology. It provides volunteer groups with all the practical advice and training they need to play a leading role in caring for their local archaeology.

The scheme encourages groups to get involved in hands-on activities to improve the condition and accessibility, and even interpretation of their chosen site.

Monuments of any age from anywhere in Scotland can be proposed, with the focus on helping volunteers to improve sites which they are really passionate about. Taking part in the scheme will equip volunteers with new skills in archaeological fieldwork and conservation, which can be used again and again to promote the heritage of their local area. It's also a great way to keep active and enjoy teamwork with real results.

All that is required to take part is membership of Archaeology Scotland (and lots of enthusiasm!).
